All of that in one kit… and that’s after we throw out (read; re-purpose!) the N-scale track, tunnel portal and related items!  Think of it this way, you’ve just gained a complete scenery kit for a section of your model train railroad that’s 12″ x 24″.  Image if you had two or three of these, you could have a completely scenic-ed section that’s 4 FOOT long or more!

Subterrain Scenery Kit – What is it?

The kit itself is to aid you in learning train layouts. You will create realistic terrain features with Plaster Cloth, rock castings and a tunnel portal. Then you will learn to make trees and landscape with various ground covers, Ballast, Talus and other scenery products.  It’s a tutorial in a box, complete with lab!  You get everything you need, including step-by-step instructions for how to assemble it.  I would recommend you purchase several, use the first one as a trainer (maybe a module layout?), then combine the remaining kits to use all around your train layouts.

Subterrain Scenery Kit Review – What I didn’t like

Of course I would prefer if there was an HO train layouts version of this kit, there wasn’t as of the time of this review.  That means if you’re into HO train layouts, the first thing you have to do is “trash” all the N scale track and roadbed as well as the tunnel portal.  However, because we’re resourceful, most of it CAN be reused!  The N scale tunnel portal can be cut down and used as an automotive tunnel on your model train railroad.  The ballast can be used anywhere,  the track can be taken apart to use the ties, or even the rail as model train rail-side scrap!

Subterrain Scenery Kit Review – Overall Thoughts

As builders of train layouts, we learn they can be very resourceful, scavenging what they need to build their HO train layouts, having Subterrain Scenery Kit arrive to your door is the simplest, most cost-effective means I can think of to learn how to scenic a section of your model train railroad or any train layouts, and when combined from several kits, you could even complete one or more HO train layouts using the Subterrain Scenery Kit!

OK, they made the track gauges. So what! All the NMRA does is take (money) dues to fund all the exespnive salaries down in their Tennessee headquarters. We need a new organization that is in touch today’s model railroading. Spent years paying for dues? Ask youself, what did you really get?
